Before the Ardh Kumbh Mela could start in January 2016, many priests of Haridwar have already started opposing the proposed construction of a bathing ghat opposite Har ki Pauri . It was decided that the proposed Chandi ghat will be built on the left bank of river Ganga, facing Har Ki Pauri.
The main reason behind the construction of the bathing ghat was that it will lessen the pressure on the main ghat which is overcrowded by crores of pilgrims who descend from Haridwar during the mela. Under the Central and state sponsored schemes a budget of Rs 70 crores have been allocated for the construction of the ghat.
According to the priests they do not want the proposed bathing ghat to be set up in an another place as as religious texts do not authorize holy ceremonies to be performed at any other place than Har Ki Pauri. On the contrary, those who support the plan think they are misleading the people because the business of many priests will split if another prominent ghat will be built in the vicinity of Har Ki Pauri.
